Experiential HIV/AIDS mentorship for health care workers in pre-service training
There have been attempts to incorporate HIV/AIDS management into the curricula for medical students, clinical medicine students, laboratory technologists and nursing/midwifery students. However, these graduates remain inadequately skilled in the rapidly changing and complex nature of HIV and TB clinical management.
To address these gaps, The AIDS Support Organisation, with the help of The Ugandan Academy embarked on a structured mentorship and coaching programme for students in pre-service medical institutes and colleges.
TASO Experiential HIV/AIDS (TEAM) trainees are placed at the 11 TASO Centres of Excellence all over Uganda: Mulago (Kampala), Entebbe (Wakiso), Masaka, Mbarara, Rukungiri, Masindi, Jinja, Gulu, Mbale, Tororo and Soroti.
This wide coverage has resulted in peripheral health units and hard to reach settings having adequate staff capacity and grounding in clinical HIV and TB management.
