African Centre of Excellence (ACE)program in bioinformatics

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) and College of Health Science (CHS), College of Computing and Information Science (CoCIS) in partnership with the US Government’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are launching the first of its kind African Center of Excellence (ACE) program in bioinformatics on the 21 st March 2019.

The Launch will commence from 8am to midday at IDI in Makerere University where it is housed and Co-ordinated by IDI, CHS and CoCIS.

The Office of Cyber infrastructure and Computational Biology under NIAID and its private sector partners in the US are making a generous in-kind donation of equipment, software and hardware infrastructure while IDI and the Colleges of Health Sciences and Computing in Makerere University (CoCIS) are providing specialized space, as well as technical staff to facilitate start up scheduled for January 2019.

The ACE will have high tech facilities to supporting its data intensive work. This will include:

• a high performance computing cluster (cluster of 16nodes, 32 cores/node, Minimum 16GB/core (512GB/node), 1 high memory Node (1TB+), GPU processors,ConnectX-5 HCAs, 2x NVMe 512 SSD per node, 100GBEthernet ToR, 1Tb solid state drive attached to each node)
• A tele learning center
• A virtual reality training room
• A collaborative room with collaborative spaces and amenities
